I am worried about my future. I am worried what if I don't get to do the thing I want to do in life. Like becoming a doctor, I want to buy my mom a house, have a happy life. I want to help my family succeed. My poor family has suffered a lot b/c of my dad. Thank God, we are not that poor. We are living a happy healthy life, but I am worried for our future. I am scared of failing. I am not doing really good in my education. I I have to become successful inorder to help my family, since I am the oldest. My mom doesn't have a stable job, I don't work, my brother works, but he can't work that much. Don't have a dad, who can help. We are thinking of buy a house, but don't have that much money and plus me and my brother are thinking of going to med school. I seriously don't know what to do. If we buy a house, who is going to pay for it, if me and my brother won't be working. The other two will be too young and in school. My poor mom can't work all her life.

Hey, whoa, steady up there! How old are you, 17? We all worry about our future- I'm actually 26 and STILL haven't figured it out! It was only 2 years ago I found my happiness in life, teaching English in poor areas of China. It's not much money, but I'm not motivated by that. My family is very poor, so the opportunities I've had to do this are priceless. I'm the first one to even own a passport in the family! My mother has epilepsy and my stepfather was badly injured in a war zone and neither can work because of there problems, so owning a house, even a decent car is a distant dream that will never happen.

Just work hard but don't put so much pressure on yourself, worry about your studies for the time being. Good luck!

There are many options. First you have approach your goal as a family and decide what it is you want, what it is you really want. Financing is the least critical of the challenges.

Here is one alternative. Decide on an area that has a community college, a state university, and a medical school. Then as a family relocate to that area ---purchase a starter home. I have friends who have done that for their kids while attending school (
Fresno State ---two kids about 4 years apart; BYU in Utah) and over the successive years that the kids took to go through school, they built huge equity in the home. Now the entire family was not in your situation so in this case the plan has to be modified some...but it will work.

Depending on your age and the age of your siblings, as soon as you are able to work open a Roth Ira. Put the bulk of the savings for education in the Roth Ira in lieu of savings. At today's rates you can earn Cd's 6 months 4%+. If you are looking at longer term then mutual fund investments might be a consideration.

Why Roth IRAs? When you go to apply for financial aid the Roth Ira isn't counted as an asset; checking savings etc. are counted. Over 10 years its conceivable a child could have $150K. Prepaid Rent and Utilities also get the balance in the usable assets down and it looks like you are destitute. You then qualify for a type of financial aid that you never have to pay back or is deferred for a long time.

One other strategy is how you treat the house. Put it into a living trust. you then pay rent to the LT and the LT makes the mortgage payments. It is viewed as independent entities.

I hope this helps. Be not fearful but believing! BudgetMaster

Worrying will do you no good. Think about it this way. If you were baking a cake, and thought it might be burning, which would do you better? To sit and worry about the cake, and imagine eveyrthing that could go wrong? Or to actualy go check on the cake, and make sure its not burning?

Life is very unpredicatble. We have very little control over what happens, we do however have full control over how we deal with things.

If you want to become a dr, rather then sitting around worrying that you won't, and wondering what will happen, do something about it. start looking into medical schools, and seeing what you need to do to get into them. If your worried about money, why not get a job? Its very hard to make money just appear, and worrying about not having it won't get you much further.

The bottom line is you need to try to stop wasting your time and energy on worry, and work on actualy doing something. I'm not going to lie and say everything is going to work out 100% how you'd like it to, but things generally do work out.

You need to do better then you appear to be to try and nail down some scholarships. You KNOW you WANT to go to med school, yet you say you are not doing well in school? Umm, That would be my first priority . As far as your Mother working forever, without you doing SOMETHING NOW, she WILL and it likely STILL won't be enough. You ALREADY KNOW the answer to your problem. Where is your Father anyway. Find him and MAKE him help.
