I actually did a lot of research on this at Christmas time, and was surprised that the Creative mp3 players are often rated higher than the iPods by electronics experts at magazines and on the internet.
I went and "test drove" both, and these are my observations:
Both provide excellent sound quality.
Both are built to be durable, even if you don't use a protective case.
Both are fairly easy to use. It is easy to sort your music, set up playlists, etc.
Both come with headphones that sound good, but the headphones are uncomfortable.
Of the two, I would choose the Creative, and here are my reasons:
I found the controls on the Creative Zen Micro I tried a bit easier to actually use.
The Creative line is designed to be compatible with a larger range of music services and software formats.
The Creative line usually offers a bit more storage for less money. For instance, I was looking at a 4 gig iPod and a 5 gig Zen Micro. The Zen Micro was nearly $100 less than the iPod, and offered a full gigabyte more of storage space.
The only real disadvantage to the Creative mp3 players is that there are more doodads and accessories available for the iPods. However, I have read that they are hurrying to catch up on that.
A good friend of mine has an iPod. He is a ture Apple fan, and has always had a Mac computer because he is an artist, so that's what he went with for his mp3 player as well. He is looking to upgrade his mp3 player in the next few months to one with a larger drive and storage capacity, and he said that as much as he loves his iPod, he is going with a Creative the next time around, mainly because of the things I mentioned above. He is especially annoyed at the fact that there is music he cannot access because he has an iPod. He actually borrowed a Creative from his brother-in-law when he went out of town for work for two weeks (his iPod had something wrong with it and was being repaired) and he says he wishes he'd bought a Creative in the first place.
Just remember when you go to buy an mp3 player that there are several things you need to take into consideration:
Actual storage capacity will be less than whatever is marked on the package because the internal programming takes up some of that memory.
You will probably want to invest in some good headphones, because most headphones included with mp3 players aren't that great.
Mp3 players are battery hogs! I talk to people all the time who are surprised at that. You'll want a lot of batteries on hand, especially if you go on a trip.
Good luck on your purchase, and enjoy your music :)

Archos AV500 does it all. It's got a 100GB hard drive and it records TV and plays movies. It plays many music formats and has great sound quality. Go to radioshack.com and get it for $467.49 with free shipping until 7/8/06. It normally costs $549.99.
