I'm just shy of 14 at the moment, and some excellent Sci-Fi books I read earlier this year were the Hyperion books by Dan Simmons. They're more mature than your stock Junior High novel, but it's very well written and has a unique view on the future.
Some easier choices that I recommend for Sci-Fi and Fantasy are the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer and the Inheiritance Trilogy (right now, just Eragon and Eldest) by Christopher Paolini (Eragon and Eldest are pretty long though, so if you've got a low tolerance to sticking with one story for a month, go with another choice).
And, of course, Harry Potter, if you haven't read the books already.

Well if you like Harry Potter I suggest the Hornblower series by C.S. Forester. It may not be Fantasy or Sci-Fi but it's about a young man who grows up to be a great leader throughout the books. He's just kickin' butt all over the place.

My son is 12 and likes the Star Wars books, books by Stephen King, Peter Straub, and Clive Clusser and H.G. Wells. Ray Bradbury touted by many, but personally, I found his writing boring.
I don't know if you might also be interested in medical mysteries, but if so, Robin Cook and Tess Gerritsen both have great books...they are both M.D. and it is also education in the process.
Any good book, regardless of the genre, should teach you 10 new things that you didn't know about before; if not it is not really a good book. (son rolls his eyes when I tell him this..wants to read for fun, not to actually LEARN something.)
