RAM memory is cheap! You should be buying much larger memory because most things today need more memory than 2-512 chips can give you!
HP does not sell chips they only sell hardware.
I understand your point, but most people are going to go more than double their RAM anyhow, if they realize the need for more RAM in today's software and multi-processing.

There is a very good reason for this and it's not because they're going cheap... Quite the opposite.
With two 256MB sticks running in parallel you get 128-bit performance versus 64-bit memory performance with one 512MB stick. It's actually 15% faster than with one single stick. This is called Dual Channelling and it actually costs more for two sticks since they have to be an identical matched pair to gain any benefit.
If you upgrade to 1GB you actually want 2 512MB sticks instead of a single 1GB stick or you lose performance. This also doesn't just apply to HP. This is the case with most chipsets made in the last 3 years.

Could be a few reasons for it like thy could be a matched pair and they may very well run faster as two seperate sticks.
Have you tried asking HP through their website why they have done this?
Have you also thought about going to a shop that may even give you a swap plus a coupe of dollars for a single 512MB stick?
I know there are a lot of shops around tht will do this type of thing as long as the sticks aren't to old.
Give it a try.

That's why... it forces you to buy more.
They make a deal with the ram manufacture so that they can get cheap ram, and sell it to you in cheap computers. The ram makers make the trade off that there is more cheap stuff on the market, but that the demand will force your hand into buying twice as much good stuff.

as said above, it's cheaper.
Look for them online. They're a lot cheaper than buying them through HP.

memory cards are optional upgradable accessories.. meaning its up to you if you want to upgrade but to your expense. HP will not profit if they give the expensive memory chips instantly because it cost them much. he he he maybe HP has tie-up with memory card producers... (",) just a non sense hypothesis.. God bless!
