I am not quite sure what you have been told the definition of a gentleman is, but absolutely 100% NO. Some signs of a gentleman are: one that listens, opens the door for you, pulls out your chair at the table of a restaurant, sends flowers to your work, wants to meet your mother.......

I think that is only acceptable if you are refering to white lies that help to make someone feel better temporarily without guiding the person to a path of disillusion.
