I classify beliefs in UFOs, abductions, crop circles, and all this kind of "New Age" behavior as superstitions.

It is the nature of the many human minds to think irrationally/superstitiously.

You can help by pointing out the flaws in other people's reasoning, and by trying to limit the combination of religion and government by voting rationally.

But, until these folks evolve past this mental dysfunction, we are probably stuck with them.

I suggest reading "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" by Julian Jaynes.
(approximately $15 through amazon.)
It gives, I believe, some excellent insight into the origins of superstitious thinking in the human animal. It also suggests an evolutionary component.

You may also enjoy perusing the following links, as they will help you find evidence to debunk many cases of superstitious thinking.

Fear of a black cat crossing your path is a superstition. Getting abducted by ET and getting probed in places the Marquis de Sade would not go is an experience. Instead of being a skeptic try some bonafide research. When Prof. Hynet was hired to head up Project Blue Book he was a UFO skeptic. By the time Blue Book was terminated he was a full blown believer, and spent the rest of his life attempting to get the world to believe. He investigated litterally thousands of reported incidents involving UFOs.
