Lack of self-belief. As soon as a game goes to penalties, you can sense a feeling of creeping dread in fans (oh, here we go again etc) and I bet it transmits to the players too. They must start thinking, " we lost five times already by this method, we never win in shoot-outs."

The solutions: mental training and positive thinking (as Essex geezer has already pointed out). Players feeding their minds with statements like " we DO win shoot-outs, I AM scoring this kick, we ARE going through. " Actually PICTURING the successful outcome in the mind's eye.

Practising does make perfect, but not in the chummy 'biosphere' of a training ground. Do as Watford FC did in the run up to the play-offs last season. Aidy Boothroyd got the players to practice their penalties in front crowds at the end of home games, and asked the supporters to jeer, boo and make the atmosphere more hostile. This would replicate the pressure situation of an actual match.

Okay, it was a little bit fabricated, but it made the atmosphere a bit more realistic than practicing on the training pitch without any fans present.

Just a better goalie, he guessed it correctly every time. Or maybe the English players are easy to read where they will shoot. I dont think Rooney was red carded for stomping on the Portugal players nuts, I think it was for pushing afterwards, two offenses within seconds of each other, you have to give a red card. In the end, the better team probably did win. And why does Beckham always take himself out of big games?

@ BloominEck

Um, shut up? Our players did deserve to win the match, and I was gobsmacked that Rooney was sent off, bloody Argentine ref, I knew he'd mess it up for us. And Carragher was sent on because in practice he was our best penalty taker.

And, our players didn't have the bottle, Lampard had an awful tournament, Carragher was unlucky and Gerrard took an awful penalty.

Basically, we were cheated out of it by that dirty Ronaldo.

The english goalkeeper is the one who is inefficient. It's high time for England to have a quality keeper apart from Robinson and James. Look at peter chec or van der sar!

A combination of
arrogance - "We deserved to win the game" Lampard, Beckham, et al.

ignorance - "I didn't know I had to wait for the ref to blow the whistle" Carragher

stupidity - "I'm gobsmacked I got sent off for stamping on Carvallho's crown jewels" Rooney

and incompetence, substituting Lennon for the aforementioned Carragher

********
HenryC -How can you possibly think we deserved to win the game? We were crap. Have you seen the match stats?

Possession: Eng 49% Por 51%
Shots on Target: Eng 7 Por 15
Shots off Target: Eng 4 Por 11

It says it all, doesn't it, that our so-called penalty specialist DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THE BASIC RULES OF TAKING PENALTIES.

Penalty shoot out's are not part of their training, statistics have shown england will have lost the match and will rarely need to rely on shoot out's to win!!!

It's not that they are bad at penalities. But lots to do with luck. Plenty of luck.

They wait to see which way the keeper is going before passing the ball to him except Hargreaves who properly whacked it in
