I played for 30 years. Now I just teach and play occasionally. One sure way to improve your speed is to improve your accuracy.
Invest in a metronome or drum machine. If you don't already know how, then learn to read. It's not that hard. Then learn a few rudiments. There are 26 that are recognized and/or taught by most teachers but if you learn the first four you'll be okay. Consider taking lessons. Ask around there's bound to be a couple of decent teachers in your area. Check the local college or high school.
Finally, there's no substitute for PRACTICE!!!!

Whether you're a drumset player, rudimental drummer, or are into any other style, its really important that you develop solid technique and control (especially when dealing with any rudiment or variation of one). I recommend the book "Stick Control for the Modern Drummer" by Geaorge Lawrence Stone. It is filled with one line excercises that will reinforce various roll techniques, flams, triplets, etc. Play each line through at least 20 times, starting very slowly (under 60 bpm) and slowly accelerate until you cannot play the excercise accurately any more. Hold this speed for several repeats, then slowly deaccelerate back down. It may seem a little boring, but remember: these excercises are basically the drummer's form of push-ups and sit-ups. They may not be fun, but you won't get anywhere without them :) .

You need to build chops. Try playing an exercise called six minute chops. You play bucks (accent tap eight notes) for 1 minute slow on your right hand then one minute at the same slow tempo on you left hand then do the same thing at a moderate tempo with each hand then finally go as fast as you can consistently play bucks for a minute on each hand. If you do this every day you will get way better!

Just practice! Use heavier sticks when practicing and use light ones when performing. It will seem much faster.
