There is a product called Grease Lightening. Can get it at Dollar General. Works very slick for all kinds of grease removal.

Try WD-40 then wash clean with liquid dish soap . UH,Oh Yeah, the Iron needs to be turned off and not plugged in to do this!
And don't soak the iron in water. just saturate a cloth with the dish soap and wipe off the WD-40. It it is still there after all this, go to Autozone or Checker Auto and buy a can of Brake Parts Cleaner and spray the crap out of it, wear protective eye ware when spraying with brake parts cleaner
