Did he ever tell you any childhood stories about losing a valued possession? When I was 16, I had a huge crush on my guitar teacher and his 17th birthday was one week before Christmas. He had noticed an Alf decoration I had in my room, and commented that when he was a child, he had an Alf doll that he took with him into the bath and ruined by getting him all soggy and moldy, so before his birthday, I went to the mall and bought him a keychain with a small Alf doll on it to keep on his guitar case. I've never in my entire life seen someone smile so genuinely much as I did when he opened that present.
It's presents that come directly from the heart that mean the most. Listen to him, talk to his family, try to dig up little things from his past, memories that are incredibly special to him, and go from there. It will make for a day he won't likely forget.

I think that if he likes sports, as most men do, try finding him some tickets to something that is close to the 14th. That way it's a really cool birthday present and you can still spend the day with him. You could even go to dinner later, probably a candlelight one. And too the pressure is off to buy him something real expensive and he would really enjoy it.

Keep the gifts separate. Would you like a Christmas present to be your birthday present also?

It seems like you really do care about him. Let him watch tv while you massage his neck, stuff like that. Do whatever you can to make him notice you care about him. Don't forget to tell him once or twice. Don't let him walk all over you after this though. Girlfriends are not personal servants! Sorry, Well, have fun.

I really like Manders answer - especially since I'd never thought about it before! :) My suggestion was going to be for you to cook a meal for him because guys seem to like that a lot. Don't worry about spending a lot of money - time is more valuable - so spend time together on that day! :)

I think that they best gift that you can give your bf on valentines day/bday is you. Yes he will appreciate gifts and all but i am sure he will appreciate you more. Give him xtra attention. Put on Destiny's Child Fullfilled CD and put on ''CATER TO YOU" and just make him feel loved.

Buy him a star you can get them on internet. they come with a pack showing you where your star is and you can have it named after him. I did it for my BF it was not too much money but a lovley pressie better than a CD.
Try it!
