there is nothing like cuddling under the covers infront of the fire with a really good book, and the old fashioned feeling of flipping the pages. however books on cd are a great way to pass the time driving and when on commute.
I recommend listing to books on CD which have advantages which you can't get by reading:
such as great actors reading
or self motivation books which are more effective and reenforced to listen to than passively read.
and especially I recommend learning a new language in which a vocal aid is necessary. if you do travel an hour each day to work you'll be speaking french in no time ;-)
here are a few of my favorites:
Harry Potter (great narration by Jim Dale!)
The 7 habit of highly effective people by Stephen R. Covey
The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis, Kenneth Branagh, Michael York, and Lynn Redgrave
the only thing I can find annoying with books on CD is losing the place when you take the CD out to play music for instance.

Books on CD are a great way to relax and take in a book while commuting or traveling. I once listened to a book on Ray Crock while on a trip across Canada and loved it. Also after previously reading the "DaVinci Code" I listened to it on CD before the movie to get back into it. Good to go and easy on the ears, give books on CD a try but don't give up on literacy.

I am a total addict!!! I started with books on tape, moved to CD and now have joined Audible.com. I listen to books to and from work and also before going to slep, I love having someone read to me as I fall asleep and my husband spoils me, but that is pushing it. I love regular books and do manage at least an hour of "real" reading a day, but for the times when I can't read, audio books are the best!!

No. It feels more like watching a film adaptation than reading to me. It takes all the fun out of creating scenes in my head, since someone else is doing half the work for me.
I guess I'd be more likely to do non-fiction. At the very least for fiction, I'd make sure to get unabridged versions.

I guess I'm not into those myself. Listetning can be too distracting and I fnd it that you remember more by reading and looking at words. Depends on what kind of memory you have too, I guess.

I prefer something which I can hold and read. Its much easier to flip a couple of pages backward if you want to check something you read earlier.

I generally can concentrate on them more when I read rather than listen to them. :)
