The chicken, because it had to take care of and hatch the egg and raise it.

Some people say that the egg came first since the chicken evolved from something else, which had already had eggs, but that simply opens the next question - in that species, which came first? Tracing it right back, which would have originated first? I think that the chicken would plausibly have come first, since, following the theory of evolution, we started evolution as bacterium that reproduced without eggs, but rather by a process of cell division; as they evolved, so they evolved into species with the capacity to produce eggs; if there is an egg, it must have been laid by something!

My favorite argument on this subject is at what point did proto-humans actually become human. The theory of evolution states that changes occur slowly and that rate is a minuscule modification at a time. To check this try looking up how long it takes to obtain a new breed of an animal, say a dog or cat, when you have an actual idea of what you want and know how to go for it. This is basically guided evolution using deliberate mutation as opposed to random mutation which is natural evolution. Now we have been doing this to chickens for thousands of years and though we have a bewildering number of different types of chickens they are all still chickens. So the avian that became a chicken came first through a series of changes (and eggs) until there was a bird with enough differences to be called a chicken. Just for fun look up the percentage of DNA you share with a chicken.

Well in all likely hood the egg probably came first.
Think of it like this.
Reptiles are among the oldest living creatures on earth. At least that's one of the theories.
What probably happened is some small reptiles slowly evolved into chicken. Well since they lay eggs, there had to be a generation where a reptile was not a chicken, and then a generation where it became the chicken.
This first generation of "evolved chickens" was born from eggs.
So the egg came first.

The egg came first from some other animal and what was born out of it was that creature with a genetic mutation creating what became known as a chicken.
So, the egg came before the chicken

According to the Bible, the chicken came first. Then the egg.
Lets put first things first. You can not have the egg without the chicken there first.

Definitely the egg. All different types of egg-layers were around long before the chicken (you didn't specify which type of egg).

THE EGG, of course, reptiles (long before chickens) layed eggs first. The chicken is a modern developed tipe of reptile. Some dinosaurs cheated extiction by becoming birds. (egg!!, go egg!)

I answered this already in like four paragraphs. If you want more details, IM me, but the answer is the egg, whether you look at it from a scientific theory or an existential stand point.
The better question is, "Aren't people who eat those chicken and egg biscuit sandwiches being overly cruel?"
