having an affair usually means you're commiting adultery.

an affair can be just sex, or a full blown "relationship"--an emotional, but non-sexual connection. and all the points in between also would qualify as an affair IMO.

but these are all words that can be used in whatever context and taken to mean whatever you want them to mean. i guess what matters is what is REALLY going on with you and the others in your life who are bringing this issue up.

Having an affair with someone generally means they're "cheating."
Having a relationship with someone generally means they're "involved," but it doesn't have to mean that they're cheating.
Affair: Business, experience, passion.
Relationship: Association, connection, bond.
