As the previous answerers stated, it has happened before. I think the biggest consequence of this type of event are the satellite and electronics all over the world. A huge shift in the magnetic field of the world could be like taking a magnet over every computer in the world. It would be a disaster to our defense systems, the economy, and communications around the world would be crippled.

this question keeps arising, so enable me spell it out: THE EARTH shouldn't lead to 2012. end OF tale. The Earth's poles shifting won't reason a black hollow to look and it does not threaten existence on earth- it has happened many cases in Earth's background. Black holes can in user-friendly terms be shaped in fairly extreme power circumstances- an excellent exploding megastar is the only factor that would desire to create a black hollow super adequate to threaten the Earth. there is not something of this length everywhere close to the Earth. i will't anticipate 2013- with any luck i'm going to end getting this question!

Yes it is true. The consequences will be a shift in the ocean lines, and the equator. It has happened before.

It could happen, but no one knows when
It has happened before.
The centrifical force would cause the oceans to slosh across the land for one thing. The rivers would reverse direction for a while and may even change course. Flooding would be massive, ruining crops and property, around the world. People and animals would die en mass.
all dried things in storage (wheat, flour, salt, etc.) would be ruined.
those who didn't die in the initial disaster would starve to death, or die of thirst. The water would no longer be drinkable.
quite a scary thought. Hope it doesn't happen in my lifetime or yours.
Hope
