Not the best way to end Knockout round matches, but they are the most practical way. It is not easy for teams to play more than 90 minutes of football, much less be able to score a goal during the Extra Time.

I had never heard of Penalty Shoot outs being referred to as PSO. I feel like I am in the army :) I will be there at nineteen hundred hours to shoot my PK for the PSO :) Just kidding. Well back in the days it was a coin toss :) I am sure you wouldnt like that.
the fact of the matter is there is no other way. Football is a very physically demanding sport. In most cases most substitutions are made before the end of extra time. Footballers run on the pitch for 120 minutes. With only a 15 minute tactical break, during which they probably sit down for a period of no more than 5 minutes. In a tournament setting it is impossible to send these guys back on the pitch for an infinite time period.
For example in basketball it is virtually guaranteed that somebody will break the tie, but in football you cant say that. Every sport in the world has a determining factor.
Look at the US. College Football - each team gets one chance from the 25 yard line (4 downs) do what you can. Is that fare? One serios to determine all your efforts for the past 60 minutes. There yoiu go essentially 4 chances. Thats all you get. And we have the PKs, 5 chances, thats all you get.

I hate them, they're awfully anti-climactic, and place too much stress on your goal-keeper.
But then, what's the alternative to PSOs?
Golden Goals have been considered 'unfair' coz there's no time for a counter.
More extra time?
As it is, at full time the players are usually already exhausted after running around for an hour and a half, giving it everything they're got. Add half an hour of extra time, and they're almost incapable of running anymore. Any more extra time on that, and they'll be crawling around the pitch. Not something I want to see.
So as much as we hate PSOs, they are necessary to the end of the game, I suppose....

What are u guys crazy? PSO is the Best way to end the game
Think about 11 players from each side running around for 120 min withTwo 15 min breaks, common
This is shows which of the teams have more in them itself to stay in the
game, playing for 120 min. Then PSO, the last determination to show which team is the best. Who can stand last and shoot penalty kicks after playing for 120 min and winning the game. PSO is the best way.
Give me 30 min of soccer and i would need a SOFA (PLAYING the game as HARD as I CAN)

yes it is..
PSO is a thriller..both teams must be able to keep their composure well..and scoring a penalty is not as easy as it looks especially when u have someone like jens lehmann guarding the goal..the penalty taker also must be sharp and accurate, otherwise the goalie can anticipate his shot..
PSO is the best way to end the match after both team failed to score a winner during normal and extra time..it's not good to continue play until someone scores because it's too tiring for the players and might take forever..

I don't think so,I mean we know that every player knows how to shoot a penalty but it depends on LUCK,so it won't be fair!!!
