On Family Guy, why does everybody hate Meg so much?

To us, she's a pretty run up kid who is boring to life and is stereotypes an ordinary teenager. To the family, she's an alien from out of space so they can pick on her any time.

Why does this family hate Meg so much? First they tell her to go down the vent, and when she says she can't, they think she means she won't fit, so they all spit on her to grease her up. Then Peter picks her up and shoves her down the vent to get help make sandwiches, and Stewie calls her a *****. Yikes.

Thanks to Peter's intercom blabbing, the robbers find Meg in the kitchen and write a sign to show Peter on the monitor that says "We ave your son." Heh.

im not exactly a great big Family Guy's fan because some of it is really gross and the show is weird, but my older brother is [I'd rather watch The Simpsons]. But I don't doubt your reasoning when you say the family hates Meg. Whenever I see it, which is rarely, Meg is always being picked on. I guess that is kind of funny, but it does questioned me too. I asked my brother and he's like, "I duhnno..." what a doofus... lolz, anyways, yeah, i see your point.. =p

I think it's a satire on classic sit-coms with worthless female siblings. TV writers were all too apt to let the unlikable character be one of the sisters. Let's look:

1) Family Ties - little sis Jen - whiny, worthless
2) Cosby Show - Vanessa - she was worthless
3) Facts of Life - Weren't they all worthless?
4) The Brady Bunch - Nobody was worse than Jan.
5) Growing Pains - whatever her name was, she sucked.
6) Mr. Belvedere - Heather. Definitely worthless.

Unfortunately, it fell upon a female cast member to be unfunny, whiny, insipid, possibly dumpy, and pathetic. Thus, Meg.

I like Meg! I think that mostly the "popular" kids don't like her. Other than that Stewie doesn't like anyone (except for maybe a rare few--there is his beloved Rupert) and Peter just can't remember her name. I think the audience can relate to her so they kind of view her as the character that depicts them in the show (I know I do sometimes). She's the average teenager.

I think it's just a running joke and that it lends consistency to what is a rather chaotic (but freakin' funny) show.

They tend to keep a few things as standards throughout so that you know them, but then everything else is strange and changes so much that it helps to fall back on some standards for each character.

Um, or she's just so plain compared to everyone else that it's easy to hate her. :)

I am sure they love her in their own special way. Not all families get along and I think that's why they made this cartoon. To show the true dysfunction.

Cuz she's fat, ugly and has no sense of style. Um and she's a desperate loser with no friends. And a lesbian. And she has bad hygiene. And this one time, at band camp....

The family has so much anger focused towards each other that instead of taking it out on each other, they just take it out on Meg. They use her as an outlet for all their anger.
