how can i use a consumer infrared (ir)lens?

hi , my laptop has a consumer infrared (ir)lens. How it works<>;<>?

I know you can "beam" things from handheld computers/pda etc into the computer with the appropriate software for the handheld computer/pda. I think its mostly for recieving but not sending data. If so it should be pretty weak, not like it could be used as a tv remote or anything unless it was only a few feet away.
