First of all, a lot depends on whether you do, in fact, ovulate. An LH surge indicates that your body is *preparing* for ovulation, but it doesn't *necessarily* indicate that it will. You need to chart (see below) to be sure.
Your chances of conceiving depend on whether you were fertile at the time. Are you checking your fertility signs, too? If not, you should; it will help you determine when the best time to try will be. Read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler for detailed information on how to do this.
As for whether you have a good chance of conceiving a girl, the answer is yes. 3 days before ovulation is perfect *if* you conceive at all. 2 days before ovulation will often help, too (and you are more likely to conceive at all), but the chances are lower. And less than 2 days gives the little Y sperm an advantage, so no more sex for at least 3 days and preferably even longer unless you are *sure* you actually ovulated.
One more thing...if you haven't actually read the Shettles book (see sources section below), I would suggest reading it. Timing is the main factor in the method, but there are other things that you won't get from just reading Web pages.

If you have sex on the exact day you ovulate, you are more likely to have a boy. No guarantees, though. As male sperm start to deteriorate after 24 hours, however, female sperm can live inside the uterus for up to 3 days.
So, if you were to have sex today, there would be more of a chances of conceiving a girl if you ovulate tomorrow. But again, no guarantees.
But if you do happen to get pregnant this time, please just be happy for the little life growing inside of you, boy or girl. Both will bring joy into your life.
Good luck.

I read that if you are trying for a girl have sex a couple of days before you ovulate. More girl sperm survive through the journey of a couple days waiting for your egg to get to your fallopian tube. Good luck :) PS studys show that more girls are concieved during the summer Your chances are good for a girl (armygirl2675@yahoo)

You can't control whether you conceive a girl or boy. That's all fake. According to that, it depends on when you conceive rule, I was supposed to have a girl and I had a boy.

The only way to select the sex of your baby is to have the sperm selected out based on the chromosomes and reimpregnated in you. This is a very expensive procedure, I would just concentrate on getting pregnant and maintaining a healthy fetus.

well the boy or girl isn't up to you.. it's up to the man's sperm.
So you have no control over that.. one thing in birthing the man can say HE did ... LOL
