What about chat rooms? I know they can be frustrating at times, with people posting threads that you find hard to follow, but some of them seem to have a good following.
Another alternative is to create a 360 page, and say some provocative things, and start inviting other users to join you. I have quite a marvelous circle of friends that I met through 360, and we also communicate over email.
Of course, there's always the face-to-face things like clubs and organizations of various types.

Yahoo chat or Myspace. Myspace also has a chat room and an IM. I've met a lot of really cool people through yahoo and myspace. Check them out. Both Yahoo and Myspace chats have chatrooms for every state, or you can go into a room specified for your age range.

You want to talk or type? I know its hard to believe there's a difference but actually....in the "old days"....when I was a kid.....we use to use instruments that made your voice vibrate across time and space and actually end up in someone else's house......its really amazing actually....but true......
