I don't believe they intentionally copied that song, but its too close to it for it to be an accident. subconcious plagarism (I think) is the term for it. george harrison and jim morrison have also done this and it amounts to the original artist having to prove that whoever plagarised the song was aware of it. from there it goes to copyrights and such. so hypethetically if petty sues them or makes a deal then if say the chili peppers sold that song for a commercial then tom petty gets 50+% of the money

Absolutely no way. The Red Hot Chili Peppers A) Don't copy, and B) They aren't dumbasses. They know how the law works, and so does the manager and label. Also, the chord progression is different. Petty has an A, and RHCP has an Am. If you don't play guitar, that doesn't look like much. But the two sound way different. Once again, there is no way in the world that RHCP coppied Tom Petty.

No way, dude. The Chili Peppers are too awesome, they don't need to copy. The songs might sound a little alike but a lot of music does sometimes. Besides the Chili Peppers are way better than Tom Petty.
