What are your specs?
(How big is hard drive and how much space free on it?)
(How much RAM?)

You will probably have to free up space or add space (add HD)

Give more info, please

Your problem sounds like its your Hard Drive that needs more space. Get a bigger one, Hard drive prices continue to be low — very low.
If you’re tempted to get another hard drive, you need to know — right up front — that more hard drive space won’t solve any clutter problems. All it does is provide more space to spread out the clutter.

The single biggest thing you can do to increase the performance of a Windows XP system is to add memory. Most systems have less memory than they should. Fortunately, memory prices are not terribly high right now.

[Some background info]
Physical memory is determined by the actual RAM installed in your system. The majority of systems running Windows XP have at least 512MB of memory, and some may have as much as 1GB of memory.

Virtual memory is maintained by Windows in a special area on the hard drive known as a swap file or a pagefile. This special file is treated as an extension of your physical RAM. If a program or its data won’t fit in the available physical RAM, they’re stored in the pagefile.

Methods of changing pagefile are already mention, so I will not go there. Remember to go higher than those values recommend by windows.

But the more RAM you got, the less pagefile will be in use.

Go to start at bottom left of screen.
Step 1:from the desptop, right click on the My Computer icon and select properties.
Step 2: Choose the 'Advanced' tab.
Step 3: In the 'Performance' option choose 'Settings' button.
Step 4: Now from teh new window choose 'advanced' tab.
Step 5: now choose the 'Change' button from the virtual memory option.
now here you can change the size of virtual memory by tying in the box or let the Your PC do ht ejob for you.

you need to basically archive some bigger files that you are no longer using and maybe delete some programs that are obsolete and then get a memory manager program from download.com. I might recommend "Freeram XP pro" but I don't know a whole lot. Either way the programs are shareware meaning they don't cost anything and they are there for you to download. Also you may look into adding a second hard drive depending on what you feel comfortable with. You can find a discarded computer and reformat the hard drive from it and add it to yours.

you need virtual memory if your accual memory (ram) is used up by programs that are running , (remember windows is one of them ) , virtual memory is space on your harddrive that is earmarked for use as memory, and if you have loads of things on your harddrive theres not enough space to run things , so all you can do is clean up your harddrive , and install more memory if you have spare slots or replace the exsisting ones with bigger ones if the motherboard will accept them .

all good advice except to access the virtual memory settings, you must not right click on the My Computer icon itself; right click on an empty space within the explorer window, then select properties, etc.
