I want to get a tattoo but people have been telling me that they can cause cancer. I always roll my eyes and say that is stupid, that is not true but now Im not so sure. Does anyone have any factual information on this? Is there any proof that tattoos can cause cancer?

Yeah, that's what I thought. I knew it had to be false, it sounded pretty ridiculous. I mean I know that I have to find a clean place and hope they sterilize their equipment properly so I do not get aids or anything like that. That was actually my biggest worry...sterilization but then I heard the cancer thing.

This is what I found on the web: "There is no evidence that support tattoos causing cancer. However, dark tattoos can make it difficult to detect moles that may be cancerous like melanoma. This is especially true for people who have "sleeves" (arms covered in tattoos), or those who have many tattoos. "

No, there is no proof that tattoos can give cancer. Only one doctor has ever reported that a patient got a non-hodgkin lymphoma in a tatoo in a medical journal. But that was in 1978 and this patient might have got the disease anyway at that particular spot of skin.

So when you decide about getting a tattoo or not, I do not think you need to be frightened of cancer. Taking good care of your skin in the sun is more important! The ultraviolet light in sunlight damages your skin. A bit of that is ok but if you get too much of it cancer may be caused. If you go sunbathing, please make sure you do not stay in the sun for a very long time and use suncream.

Back to the tattoo: if you decide to get one, please make sure that a licenced shop places the tatoo. The needles need to be very clean. If they are not, you may become infected with some virus, such as hepatitis C. You should be fine if an experienced, reliable person does the job.

I wouldn't worry about it. Worrying about a thing makes it so. In other words if you don't think about what might happen it might not. supposedly cancer is treatable. There is also those that believe that cancer only manifests itself in those that think about it, or those that worry all the time etc, worry can Stress the body and nd make a person sick as hell.( I wouldn't get a tattoo where it can be seen.) Cause it'll look like **** when your older!

I haven't heard anything about that. But I really hope there is no truth to it because I have three tatoos and I plan to get a few more.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
