The AL ROY race should be fun the second half...Johjima, Liriano, Papelbon and Verlander you could make a good argument for any of the four...

If Johjima catches 150 games, hits 20HR and has a .300BA, that's a heck of a season for a rookie catcher....Though I'm still not sure how/why MLB figures a guy who has played years of ML equivalent baseball is a rookie?

If Papelbon picks up 50+ saves with an ERA in the area of 1.00

If Liriano goes 18-2 with an ERA under 2.00

If Verlander wins 20+ games and Detroit wins the AL Central.

It's going to be a very tough choice for ROY....You have to think that a couple of these guys performance will fall off, they usually do...I have had the chance to watch 3 of the 4 play at least some(not a lot)...I have yet to see Papelbon pitch...Ok so here goes for my analysis of the situation...Starting pitchers just by the nature of the position, it's going to be much harder for them to keep putting up the kind of numbers they have for the first half...Liriano is bound to get hammered a couple of times, the same for Verlander...If I'm wrong about that though and one of them does have the same success in the 2nd half as the first...Starting pitcher is so much tougher a position that I would have to vote for Liriano or Verlander...

But on the other hand if it goes the way it's most likely to, which is, Johjima will have at least as good a 2nd half as first...After a little bit of a slow start Kenji has been heating up...He's hitting .337 over the last month...

Paplebon will continue to pick up save after save, he plays on a very good team...So, 50+ saves is a very good possibility, even if he gets cuffed around a couple of times it would not ruin his ERA/season....

I think it's going to come down to Johjima and Papelbon...If the Red Sox win the East then Papelbon will probably win...If the Yankees catch them...I would say that evens things up and it would not surprise me to see Kenji Johjima win....

If I had to vote today, on who has had the best first half. My vote would go to Liriano...But like I said earlier, it's a very long season...

I wouldn't mind having any of the four on one of "my" teams, be fun to watch them every day....

Right now, I would choose Liriano over Verlander. Verlander is having an excellent season, but Liriano has been sensational. Still, there is a lot of time left in the season.

Well in the AL i think it'll go down between Liriano and Verlander - both very good, however when you look at it Liriano outdueled the Rocket. Although the one point agains Liriano is that he started the year off in the bullpen vice Verlander starting in the starting rotation - plus that who has the 100mph fastball?

He has been good, but Liriano will win. He has been unstoppable.

Papelbon will also be some good competition for Verlander. I say Liriano 1st, Papelbon 2nd, and Verlander 3rd.

Jonathan Papelbon leads the league in saves. I think he will be AL Rookie of the Year.

Hell No! Papelpon all the way! In fact, he is so good that it is hard to even think of him as a rookie

if voting ended today papelbon would win ROY with liriano coming in second and verlander third. for him to win he would have to have and astonishing second half or the other two would have to nose dive int he second half.
