In many countries people start taking on adult responsibilities at 14 or 15. The West is really one of the only places that allows for a prolonged childhood and adolescence. This is mostly good, actually, because it allows people time to ask questions and fully develop. In US culture, in some ways children must mature far more rapidly now than even their parents did, based on life situations and realities. Complex social issues, long-standing problems, loss, alienation, and violence are all very much a part of growing up today. Children and teenagers must form opinions about drugs, sex, gangs, politics, religion, and alcohol much younger than before. However, the sense of responsibility and social commitment that mark maturity seem to be taking longer to develop, at the same time. Maybe because it is so easy for kids to feel ambiguous with so much conflicting information out there (most of it based not on facts but on people's opinions). In one sense, by the time teenagers graduate high school, they have been exposed to more "adult" themes and situations than they know what to do with. On the other hand, there is a not a huge push out there to promote responsibility amongst the young. Much of our popular media promotes self-centeredness and consumerism, and, as the media continues to increase its role in lives of yuong adults, where does that leave them?

Adult age differs depending on the person. Some people are well more mature at 16 than some at 40.So there really can't be a legal adult age that would be better than 18.

I totally agree with you. In most (not all ) cases a person at 18 is not able to be secure within themselves and is not able to make imformed decisions and then I saw in other posts that someone said 21... Well at 21 in most states you are legal to drink... This causes a new problem for the young people. Most go out and get totally smashed. Imagine how this 21 yo would feel having to come home and explain to mom and dad why they are in this condition. That is if they have decent parents.....I know I would not have wanted my parents to see me in that state of mind.

In the United States, 18 allows you to legally buy cigarettes, and go into debt. You still have to be 21 to be able to legally buy alcohol.
Of course you can spend the rest of your life in prison at the age of 14-16 depending on where you live.

18 is old enough.
I was in college less than one month after I turned 17, is that not mentally an adult??
A lot of 18 year olds are just immature because their parents need to do a better job at parenting.

It's all arbitrary, anyway.
The more peculiar part, I think, is that some things are not permissable until age 18, and others until age 21. There should probably be at least some sort of regularization there.

I'm gonna be 20 and I'm more immature than what I was at 15 so yes!
I feel nothing like an adult. That's a scary thought actually!

The adult age is WHENEVER A PERSON GROWS THE HELL UP. For most people this never even happens.
