I have been complaining that "R&B ain't R&B no more" but there's still actually a few really good singers out there. I really like Lauryn Hill & the Fugees, Jill Scott, and India Irie. Tweet also is actually really awesome and talented, but she's been mispromoted as just another bubblegum hip-hoppish type of singer. But she's really more India Irie than Ashanti.

Ooh, ooh forgot to mention Toni. But lately she's been kind of a sell out. On one of her newer records she's trying to sound like she's 15 with the guest rappers and cheesy clothes.
Oh and I love jazz. I was complaining about too much R&B crossing over into hip-hop. And I think India's naturally sexy, IMO.

MJB is also a true talent. She's really authentic and you can feel her pain in her songs.

For me, and I admit I'm not really a fan of contemporary R&B, there's nobody more talented & sexy than Toni Braxton! She's the only one whose CDs I buy. Other than that take me back to the "Funk" of the '70s or the "Soul" of the '60s!

I would agree about Jill Scott and India Irie. They don't rely on sex appeal and bling to create and promote their art. There are two on a list of just a few artists who are dedicated to the music itself, and not the packaging.

i think that Mary J is the best
her career speaks for it self. she has been in the game over 10 years and her music has always been true to her heart. and she is also a great performer, when ever shes on the stage singing live u can tell that she is really in touch with her music and what ever she is feeling some how by the end of her performence u feel it too.

I would have to add Macie Gray to your list of the living. You are right, many of today's R&B crossover to jazz.
