He was on a yellow card suspension. He had picked up two yellow cards in previous matches.

Revision: Yeah, that's right. It was for the swing he took at the Argentinian guy after the quarterfinal match. I was thinking of someone else that was on a yellow card suspension.

And I don't think it will do any good for AC Milan and Juventus to be relegated and stomp all of the lower division teams 8-0 every game.

Well, that's a weird story .....Frings was punching a player from Argentina in self defense, well and Italy made sure he get punished by the FIFA and couldn't play.....
That's the way soccer is played at times ;-)

he seemed to lay a fist on julio cruz of argentina which led him to be suspended for the italy match. of course the controversy was that an italian tv station provided the video footage which landed frings in hot soup.

He was caught on satellite when he was throwing a punch during the incident that occured following the Argentina game. His punishment was a red card despiute being after the game and he was given an automatic suspension on his next international match.
