There could be a lot of reasons. I don't know your experience with computers so I'll try to give you a few basic things it could be:
1. Your speakers are unplugged: Make sure your speakers are both connected to some power source and are turned on properly. Then make sure that a wire goes from your speakers to the audio-out of your computer.
2. Your volume is too low: Make sure that your speakers' volume is turned up to an appropriate level. Then make sure your computer's audio is working. If you're on a PC, find the speaker-symbol in the bottom right tray and double-click it. Make sure that your main output is all the way up--and you might as well make sure all those levels are up. On a Mac, click the speaker-symbol on the top right and move the ball to the top of the meter.
3. Find out what sound card you have. On a PC. right click My Computer and click properties. Click hardware, go to device manager. Go down to sound and see what it says. Type that in Google (or Yahoo!) with the word drivers or support or manual. Try to find out more about your card, see if others have similar problems. If you find drivers, try to download them and update them. Updating drivers is a whole other story.
4. If this is a new and random occurrence, there may be a problem with your card itself. You might need to bring it in for a checkup.

Good luck!

Make sure that your speakers or headphones are properly connected. If they're connected fully into the back of your computer, you may want to see if your sound card is damaged. Go into your Device Manger by right-clicking the My Computer icon and hitting "Properties". From this menu, click the "Hardware" tab, then click the button that says "Device Manager". Look around until you see the listing for your sound card, and check it's status by double-clicking on it. If it says it's functioning properly, but you still are getting no sound, then it probably means that your sound card is damaged but it's not detecting the damage, itself. You may need to replace it. I don't think they're too expensive to replace.

Just try reinstalling the sound device... from the mother board disc which you got ... on purchasing your pc...

if you can hear the sounds whoile u play mp3''' or such... then go to settings of your messentger and then take audio ... then ... enable sounds this will do

Please describe in detail ... then i can help u more

It would be more easy to help u if u could specify which mother board ... or which sound card your are using....

So that i could give u the correct answer..

well there could be more then one cause for this.

one thing i'd like to know is can you play mp3's and hear the music? if you can't then, it could be the sound card or the speekers.

if you can then the problem is simply how messenger is set up.
what you want to do then is go into prefrenses then alerts and sounds, and make shure "enable sound alerts" is checked then look though each event listed there to make shure a sound is asigned to that event.

run this command:

dxdiag

and see if you have installed the proper drivers for your sound card

if you cannot see an speaker icon on the lower right taskbar besides the time display probably you do not have an sound card installed or a driver is missing....

if you have that icon right click it and go to sound properties and see if you muted some of its componets...goodluck

same thing happened to me. Click on "my computer" and then go to control panel. Click on audio and speech and then see if it says your speakers are muted. That happened to me today. Good luck.
