a swamp cooler is cheeper, but creats a lot of moister in the air. AC costs more, but is more efficient.

A swamp cooler is good as long as you have cheap water and live in an area where it is mostly dry and hot. If you live in a hot, humid area though, air conditioning is required. The reason is, swamp coolers works by using air pulled across the water-soaked mesh. This, and evaporation, cools the air, which is blown into the house. It's humid cool air. But it doesn't work in a humid area. You end up adding to the humidity since the air is already saturated with water, and evaporation is nill across the mesh. The result is misery. So, if in an arid area with low humidity and cheap water, go with the swamp cooler. Otherwise, you have to use air conditioning.

It also depends where you live. Swamp coolers will not work at all in areas that have high humidities. I don't know what the threshhold is but if you are near that point, your decision will be to probably go with the A/C.

THe good news is that A/C prices have really come down.

An air conditioner, if you can afford to run it. Swamp coolers make the air moist, can contain mold, are OK but do not get the home as cold.
