5 second rule is when the player in position of the ball and he either stops dribbling and holds onto the ball for 5 seconds or dribbles in the same place for 5 seconds without making any progress i believe...as far as the other rules....8 seconds to get the ball across midcourt...3 seconds in the lane offensive & defensive and for free-throws it's 10 seconds to shoot...hope that helps

If you hold on to the ball for 5 seconds without dribbling or passing then you are considered to be "traveling" and that is a penalty which results in either a foul shot or a forfeit of the ball.

There's also a five second rule in college basketball where the player with the ball can't have his back to the defiance player for more then 5 seconds.

While one is scoring from outside circle,his team -mate should not be in the circle for more than 5 second.In case his team-mate was there for more than 5 second,then even if the ball is basket ed,it would not be counted.

After so many comments, I still don't understand the 5 second rule and more importantly, why there is such a thing. NBA rules are meant to promote entertainment and they have rules to promote stars and more entertaining plays. Amateur basketball defense rules are simple. You can position yourself anywhere on the court and guard whoever you want to guard.

When a fan drops their hot dog on the floor, they have 5 seconds to pick it up before it becomes unsuitable for eating.

say your dribbling the ball with one hand and holding a cheeseburger with the other, if you accidentally drop the burger, you have "5 seconds to pick it up and eat without it being contaminated"....

iluvduckies is sayin' the fact, is this violation the same with the Inbound, and Free Throw line... do this violation counts for 5 seconds too?
