The white gooey, or stringy protein in your eyes is caused by allergic conjunctivitis. Although it sounds serious it is relatively benign. In the fluid of your eyes, your body produces antibodies against certain substances like pollen, dust, animal dander etc. Some people may never realize they are allergic to something although they get itchy eyes and white gooey stuff. If you would like to reduce it you can try to take a non drowsy anti histamine and that should do the trick.

i assume your talking about the 'sand' that the sandman leaves behind that you wake up with? it's secreted by the conjunctiva, a little gland right behind your eye close to the nose (behind the corner of the eye closest to the nose, that is). there's no real way to slow it down. it's completely normal however and nothing to be worrie dbaout. if is too actie, and accompanied by eye pain or redness, you could have an inflamed conjunctiva, also known as conjunctivits, more commonly known as PINK EYE! the 'gooey stuff' doesn't really do much in the big globs it forms. no worries!

It is there to coat any sharp bits of stuff that get into your eyes, so that it won't scratch your eye. Then, your blinking and tears wash it to the corners of your eyes, to make it easier to get out.
It sounds like you might need to use some optical saline drops from time to time to help clear up your eyes. I mean the "natural tears" kind of eye-drops, without the extra chemicals.

Gross as it may sound, what some people call "eye boogers" is functional......it acts as an "escort" for small particles, e.g., microscopic dust, fibers, etc., and takes them off of the lens of the eye to protect it, and "escorts" these tiny particles off the lens.......Since it is a preventative, there is little way to reduce it........ :-)
