I love watching that show, even after all the years. I'm just wondering why exactly it decided to end the serial where it did in '69.

For the same reason such shows as "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "The Addams Family" stopped production. Their particular kind of shows (i.e. country and monster) went out of fashion with TV audiences. Same thing with "Jeannie", "Bewitched", and "Nanny & the Professor." They went out of style.
