The role of Admin or Administration in an office is:

Besides needling rest of the office every now and then, they are supposed to maintain smooth physical functioning of a business or an organisation or an entity. This includes keeping and maintaining records of - office, clients, staff etc; liaisoning between accounts and rest of the departments, could be premises maintenance if no separate PMD, look after daily needs of the office, its furniture and fixtures; official transportation, if no separate HR is there - admin assumes the responsibilities of HR as well, tendering and procedural aspects thereof and all general work which no one else does.

It can be everything from getting coffee for your boss to actually doing most of the work for him. Usually the higher up you go as an admin the more travel plans you make for your boss. But always it's about answering the phone and mailing or copying things. Sometimes if you get to be a really important admin you get to have a temp (temporary worker) help you with your projects.

If you have an admin and are low in the ranks of the company they will usually ignore you. Then you can complain to your boss who will probably do nothing and you'll have to do whatever it is you needed in the end yourself anyway.
