They're money pits...

... but if you can afford one, the best thing to do is order supplies online, shop around locally for the cheapest tank and stand, and go to every petstore in the yellow pages to check out quality of fish.

I don't live in Palmdale, but I've found that (atleast in NY), the quality of saltwater fish varies even depending on the store (one petco has really nice fish, another location has awful fish).

Overall, I've had the best experiences with fish by ordering online.... but, the "biotope" which I'm mimicking is a saltwater lagoon (I also have part of it divided into a general fish only community), so most of mine have come direct from collectors in Florida (yay for seahorses :-) .

I listed my favorite sites below. Drsfostersmith.com has cheap shipping, and is good for supplies. Aquabid.com is addictive (I've seen that floridapets has special deals advertised there) and occasionally get good used stuff. Floridacollector takes forever to answer inquiries, but has some really cool stuff and besides the length of time taken to order and ship, I cannot reccommend him enough.

Again, I don't live local to you so can't really say where is best. I think that the same generalities would apply though, shop around to find a really nice creatures in good health...

Salt water reef tanks are cool. I have had several. What money pits. If I had back all the money I spent on them I would have a real nice car. When I buy anything, I figure its only temporary and now tell myself the fish, anemone, coral, whatever didnt die, it moved out. My parents owned a fish store. My mom is an enthusiast too. We have researched and done so many things. I think ocean things really need the ocean. But good luck.
