When the anime first started being released in the States, it was mentioned that they had the intent to make nearly one hundred episodes. Does anyone know, has the idea been scrapped?

Animerica Magazine did an article about Twelve Kingdoms when it first started being released in the United States, they said the series had 96 episodes. Only 45 episodes have been released here. Does anyone know what happened to the remaining 61 episodes?

I don't know where the 96 episodes came from. Maybe they wanted to do that many originally, and hoped for a run like Rurouni Kenshin or Fashionable Judo Girl Yawara, but couldn't make it work.

All I see are 45, even on sites that track Japanese TV air dates. It's too bad; I'd love to see more of the series as well. the "ending" left a lot of open questions.

Despite its popularity, anime is a severly underbudget project in Japan. It is extremely rare for a show to reach even 45 episodes, and the idea that Twelve Kingdoms would reach 100 was insane for anyone to have.
At episode 45 they decided the series would come to an end, either from lack of ideas, budget, or decrease in popularity for Japan viewership, I do not know but, either way, they scrapped any idea for a long show. Managing to reach an impressive 45 is still a nice feat, though.
Because it's based off of an epic series of novels, they could have reached even more than 100, but, yes, they have scrapped the idea of a long-running show. It ends at 45 with nothing more.

Apparently, the show was originally scheduled for 68 episodes but due to some production difficulties, they had to cut it 45 episodes.
