Infections can be passed on via emails and attachments, USB devices or downloads. Avast is a reasonable Anti-Virus, I use the freeware version on some of my customers computers. The freeware has no firewall, but I assume your said your using "Pro" it is purchased. I also run a purchased version of Malware Bytes in protection mode. I scan with this in safe mode, ( tap F8 on start up), this is a selective start up and most infections are dormant and easy to remove. If you can't get rid of infections via software, reformat the drive is the other scenario. You should be in the habit of backing up as I can't recommend backing up on an infected drive? You may have to suck it up and loose personal data? Before you scan make sure all your definitions are up to date.

Go to symantec.com and run a free virus scan, you will be advised from there.

Never scan your computer with web pages running, scans should run alone.
