We drive a 2000 Mazda Protege and about a week ago we noticed a quiet "creak" when the steering wheel is turned. It sounds like a creaky old door. The creaky noise is getting louder and louder and the steering wheel is harder to turn. Could it be the steering rods? the power steering pump? will a powersteering fluid flush do the trick?? HELP!! we are mere starving students and cannot afford a big repair bill.

It sounds like its leaking steering pump fluid and is causing the pump to squeal. Check to see if there's fluid first before doing a flush. Hopefully its not the racken pinion, which is what gives you power steering capabilites. Since it gets harder to turn, I'm really suspicious of the pump and if it has enough oil. Check ur belts on the steering pump and see if they have good tension on them. I think its that or your racken pinion is gone bad.
At first I thought it was your CV joints on the front axles but if your steering wheel just gets harder then that sounds like the power steering system is the problem. hope this helps

the "creaky" noise could be one of 2 problems 1) the power steering pump is goin bad or 2). it might be the wheel bearings goin bad

Call up some mechanics and ask if they offer free estimates. If they do, take it by and get them to tell you what's wrong and give you an estimate on a repair. Tell them you're pricing other mechanics but that you'll probably be back later...

Could be that you need a CV joint. I had a very similar sound from a car I had a few years ago and that's what it turned out to be.
