They're not dumb. Obviously you've never had an abusive, controlling partner. Are you the type of person who gets mad at a driver for speeding past you. You probably flip them off but, what if they were on there way to the hospital because their child was dying? Think about. Not everyone has your life.

The word is not dumb. I have been in that situation for a year and a half. This man was so great for 4 months, and i fell in love with him. He would rub my back every night, take me out, and we would have long talks. After i fell in love with him then he hit me, i was leaving and he came in hysterically crying to me apologizing. (remember that girls are always wanting to believe someones sorrys because they love you, and love makes you very forgiving and understanding) then he did it agaian and again and everytime he hit, i swore to myself i would leave. He would let me he would hold me down and cry, he knew my weak spots, pretty soon i did leave after a year 1/2 because i was fed up and i knew that my hope that he would change wasnt there so i left and i moved on and now i am 7 months preg and happily engaged with a man who dont even call me names.
I guess it is just the hope that he will change because they love him.

It's a self confidence thing. Often, men who hit women also demoralize them, making them beleive that nobody else would want to be them. If someone tells you that your ugly, fat, or stupid regularly, whether you are or not, whether you originally thought you were or not, you're going to eventually beleive it. So they stay with the guy because they just don't want to be alone. and because they beleive that, as they're often told regularly, as well, that they are nothing without the man there.

I'm not in prison. If a man ever hit me I'd kill him
I don't know why some women allow a man to hit them. I'd be dead or in prison but no man would ever hit me!

i did for 3 years. we had a daughter and the abuse was still there. the final day we were there, he picked me up by my neck and threw me across the room while i was holding our daughter, who was 6 months old then. he kicked us out without our belongings, and that was the last time i saw him. she is 7 yrs now and we are doing alot better now.
