It comes in different forms -- heat (thermal), light (radiant), mechanical, electrical, chemical, and nuclear energy. Energy is in everything. We use energy to do everything we do, from making a jump shot to baking our favorite cookies to sending astronauts into space -- energy is there, making sure we have the power to do it all. There are two types of energy -- stored (potential) energy and working (kinetic) energy. For example, the food you eat contains chemical energy, and your body stores this energy until you release it when you work or play.

In general, the concept of energy refers to "the potential for causing changes". The word is used in several different contexts. The scientific use has a precise, well-defined meaning, whilst the many non-scientific uses often do not. (see here.)
In physics, energy is the ability to do work and has many different forms (potential, kinetic, electromagnetic, etc.) No matter what its form, physical energy has the same units as work; a force applied through a distance. The SI unit of energy, the joule, equals one newton applied through one meter, for example.

Quite simply, the energy of an object is its capacity to move something else. so a rock on a cliff has potential energy, because it can fall and start moving. Gasoline has chemical energy, because we can use it to make things move...
So if you're wondering whether something has energy or not, ask whether, somehow, it could cause motion.

energy is any sort of thing you know exists that isn't an idea but also isn't touchable. things like heat, light, sound are energy, but things in motion or not in motion also have it (potential/kinetic energy).
