Sigh. I wish you people woudl stop guessing at answers. Every response so far has been completely incorrect.

Quite simply venom is a type of poison. All venoms are poisons but there are many poisons that are not venoms. All venomous creatures are poisonous but there are many poisonous creatures that are not venomous.

A poison is any substance capable of killing something without causing overt phyical damage. So mercury is a poison, so is carbon dioxide, or snake venom, or the skin secretions of a toad, or weed killer or many other susbatnces. They all kill and they do so without causing very much physical damage. In contrast fire or a knife aren't poisons because although they can certainly kill they do so through the physical damage they cause.

A venom is a poison that an animal produces explicitely for injecting into other animals. So a snake or spider or jellyfish or bee all produce venom. We know they produce venom because they all produce poisons that they inject into other animals.

In contrast toads do not produce venom, nor do monarch butterflies or puffer fish or poison ivy. All those organisms certainly produce poisons but the poison isn't intended to be injected into another naimal. Their poisons work when another animal touches or eats them so they aren't venoms.

The short answer is that if a substance kills without causing much physical damage it is a poison. If the poison is designed explicitely to be injected into another animal it is a venom.

The following list might help ypu to undertsand the difference.

Arsenic: poisnous
Deadly nightshade: poisonous.
Rattle snake: poisonous AND venomous
Jellyfish : poisonous AND venomous
Puffer fish: poisonous
Fire ant: poisonous AND venomous
Cigarettes: poisonous
Honey bee: poisonous AND venomous
Three weak old chicken salad: poisonous

Poisonous more refers to something you'd eat or touch and have an adverse reaction to. Like poison ivy, poison dart frogs, or some types of berries, etc. Venomous means more it something bit something, it would have a reaction. Like the gila monster, or a venomous snake, or a sting ray's barb. Poisonous means that you have to do something to get the reaction, such as touch the poison ivy, or eat a poisonous berry. Venomous means that something else has done something to give something a reaction, say the venomous snake bit you.
Hope this helps!

venomous has direct reference to poison coming from an animal. For example, a rattlesnake can be both poisonous and venomous but a bottle of clorox bleach would only be poisonous.
