In China women are allowed to have only one child and women who get pregnant a second time are forced to have an abortion. Yet, even though this sort of goes against the concept of "choice," I've yet to hear ONE American pro-choice group who condemned China's population policy. Does choice only matter if it's used for choosing to terminate the life of the fetus ?

to "g" : Actually many Republicans who were admantly opposed to normalizing trade with China did so in large part because of the lack of freedom in China and the conditions the Chinese people live under.

Pro-choice tend to support a woman's right to choose.

However, in China, it is not entirely the woman's choice. You have cultural pressures that believe boys are vastly superior to girls. You might also get some pressures from the older members of the family who will condemn the woman if she gave birth to a daughter.

I have lived in China for many years and there are a few myths that need to be clarified about forced abortion in China. I know many friends who have mare than one child and never were forced to have an abortion. That being said, I am sure it does exist in various parts of the country.
Some facts:
1. People whose official residence is deemed " the countryside " can have 2 children if the first is a girl.
2. Couples whose parents come from 1 child families can have 2 children.
3. If you work for the government and have more than 1 child you will lose your job and all government benefits.
4. After the birth of your first child the woman is encouraged to " have her tubes tied" or have an IUD implant, otherwise, you will have to routinely go to the hospital for a pregnancy test
5. If you are not married and are pregnant you will face a fine.
6. People from the 56 official minority groups in China are not bound by the one child policy. They can have as many as they like. It only applies to majority Han ethnic group which accounts for roughly 90-95% of the population.
7. there is a wide divide between the middle class and the poor. Having money will allow you to get around most of the 1 child policies.
8. Ultrasound sex determination is illegal in China, but again, with a bit of money or connections you can get it done.
Personally, I have to applaud the Chinese people for the one child policy and the sacrifices they have made because of it. While having government dictate family policy may seem unfathomable to a western trained mind, you must realise they have 1/5 of the world's population in a country where at least 1/2 is virtually unihabitable ( desert, mountains). More nations should adpot this policy as overpopulation will be one of the greatest threats the world will have to face in the not too distant future

Because China left reproductive choices in the hands of the general population, now they have to make unpleasant and unpopular decisions for young girls who want a family. If they don't millions could starve to death in famines every year until the balance of food/pop. is restored. By taking the decision out of the hands of the women of China they will avert the needless suffering of millions. They have no other choice. If the idiotic right-to-lifers keep doing what they are doing, eventually it will come to that here in America as well. Is that really what we want? I don't think so, this is yet another good reason why abortion must remain legal in this country!

Yes, and the reason why they do that is to control the population. I am chinese, and i think it is great. Hey, would you guys do something when yur country is like 1.2 billion people and is smaller than Canada. I would, and so would most people. Heck, limiting children is the only way, cuz you cant prevent sleeping together. I am open to suggestions, anyone, including u, can offer me some reasonable alternative to this question? I think not.
Yes, it is against the "rules", but isn't arranged mariage against the rules too? Free to be born, well free to marry.
Yet in some countries, it is not so easy. Rules are meant to be broken, and some rules can be bent a little, like a white lie, for the sake of the whole country. I think it is reasonable.

It's to control their population, but i heard women in china get abortions until they have a son. Perhaps abortions should be the thing of argument in china.

Those are excellent questions. For the record, I fully support a woman's right to choose whether to engage in activity likely to result in conception. Once conception occurs, a woman has an absolute right to choose whether to keep the baby or place it for adoption. She can choose which hospital to go to. In some places, a woman can even choose to give birth at home, with a midwife in attendance. Out of all these choices that a woman can make, not one involves the death of another human being.

The short answer to your questions: It's called selective morality.

what kind of retarded question is this? sorry the side you don't like doesn't publicly condemn everything everyday?

I've never heard conservatives complain about how China treats people... even though they cry about how bad the iraqis had it... but that doesn't mean that they don't care... or does it?

just because I don't yell out to aliens to "not destroy the earth"... it doesn't mean that I want them to destroy the earth...

lack of public attention in a group is far from accepting an action... it's pretty basic logic...

those groups are well aware that China doesn't care what they have to say and that it would be a waste of their breath... at this point in time, at least...

American women must make all the choices, and all the decisions,, American men don't want to get involved with their offspring usually,, much less if unexpected embryos are the topic for the anti-abortion conservative fathers..

"The supercomputer referred to as the concepts is a good sized one." it is not info for a god via fact it must be info for different issues to boot: -nature (nature does the assembly of the concepts) -extraterrestrial beings -a magic gadget that designs all varieties of issues "3-dimensional utility this is compressed and zipped up, DNA, must be the main important." DNA isn't utility. there is no processor. DNA is a template for making enzyme, proteins, supplements, different issues. i will understand why human beings think of of it as utility. it variety of feels to have binary archives. extremely, that's a quad. yet besides, there is no longer a processor. that's totally a threat that it arose out of organic approaches, extraterrestrial beings, a magic container. in case you declare that god is the only selection, you're fooling your self.

No pro choice person advocates a law demanding only one child to a family. It's a CHOICE, remember? No one is forcing anyone to have one. If you don't like abortion, don't have one.
