If you want an epidural and have a tattoo on your back, it would be best to contact the hospital anesthesiologist staff and find out their policy in regard to tattoos and epidurals.

Actually in some cases it is true. I supposed it is up to the doctor to decide. I read an article in Toronto Sun about a woman who was refused an epidural because of her tatoo. The doctor said that a tiny piece of skin is trasfered with the needle when epidural is given. There's no evidence what is the long term effect of the ink once in the body and moreover in the spinal cord. Apparently some doctors want to stay on the safe side and not expose their patients to any health risk in the future.
Talk to your doctor about it.

The puncture area of the epidural is not that large that it will distort or damage a tattoo, nor is there anything about the tattoo that would cause any problems if punctured.
There should really be no problem with this.
Take care

No, the tattoo on your back has nothing to do with the epidural. They place the needle a little ways up your back anyway it'll be away from the tattoo.

That is absolutely not true. They may have a little trouble finding the right place to insert the needle, but it should not hinder your ability to have an epidural if that is the type of pain control you want.
