It's a set of principles that applies differently and usually more rigorously to one group of people or circumstances than to another. For example, if your parents smoke but tell you not to, that's a double standard. Men who sleep around are considered studs and women who sleep around are considered sluts. That's also a double standard. In other words, a double standard is something that is okay for one group, but not another.

Double standard means that "rules" do not apply to everyone equally or only apply in certain circumstances.

For example a parent might say that the rule of the house is there is no smoking. They catch their child smoking and give them the business. But later that day the parents have a friend come over and let them smoke in the house- double standard.

A double standard is when one standard, such as behavior, is used for one person or group, and a different standard is used for another person or group under identical circumstances, i.e., it is socially acceptable for a man to have an affair, but it is not acceptable for a woman to have an affair.

It refers to 2 varying paradigms or regimens for determining the extent to which an occurrence is disallowed/punished or permitted/condoned. e.g. If all rich speeders are given a ticket and all poor speeders are put in jail, that is a double standard, i.e. there is one standard which applies to all rich people and there is one standard, BUT A DIFFERENT STANDARD which applies to all poor people.

an example of a double standard is when your parents tell you that smoking is bad for you and you shouldn't do it, but they smoke.

Where a law applies to you but not to me.

A good example is where the US Governement claims to be in favour of International Law, but votes against a UN resolution calling on all states to obey international law and sticks to the principle that international law is 'inappropriate' for the US to follow.

It's where the US claims to be in favour of human rights yet routinely tortures inmates at Bagram (in Afghanistan) (it has recently scaled down torture at Guantanamo) and its two 'black' prisons in Eastern Europe or sends prisoners to third countries to be tortured.

Or where the US claims to be in favour of 'free trade' - except for the protectionist tariffs it imposes on others.
