Unless you give us something for that to be equal to, you cannot solve for a.... so the furthest you can simplify it would be:

-40a6 + 40a5

umm.. why don't you just combined like terms together first.

and are you looking zeros for the expression... or what?

The actual answer is -40a.
-50a - 240a + 250a
-290a + 250a = -40a
