I'm sure you've heard the clichè "that's the greatest thing since sliced bread". Well what exactly makes "sliced bread" so great to begin with? I mean, is it really anything more than a slight alteration of normal, uncut bread? Personally, I feel that UNCUT bread is better than sliced bread. It just has this grand flavor. So what say you? Can anyone champion the cause and validity of sliced bread or is it no more than a wheaty charlatan?

Hmm...

In relation to convenience vs flavor...

Prostitution is a convenient way to get sex...

But do we think it's better?

The only thing sliced bread has for it is the convenience factor. Being able to crank out sandwiches for 3 kids in a jiffy makes it a terrific timesaver, so for Moms or Dads in a hurry, or the Babysitter trying to make something quick and easy, it can't be beat.

However, a fresh-baked deli loaf of bread is unmatched in flavor and texture. If you get good at it, home-made bread can be awesome, if a bit time consuming. Pre sliced may score on the quick and easy front, but for the discriminating eater, the thicker slices of a real loaf of bread are unmatched.

Sliced bread - meaning pre-sliced, packaged bread - has existed only since 1928, and it appears to be something of an arbitrary selection as the benchmark against which later inventions should be judged. It has been said that "the phrase is the ultimate depiction of innovative achievement and American know-how"

A little known fact about sliced bread is that its origin can be traced back to a single place. Chillicothe, Missouri, is the official "Home of Sliced Bread." Sliced bread was born on July 7, 1928.

The popular use of the phrase appears to derive from the fact that Wonder Bread - the first mass-marketer of sliced bread as a product - launched a 1930s ad campaign touting the innovation. As one source reports, "soon every new innovation of convenience was being touted as the 'greatest thing since sliced bread.'"

Also, sliced bread is great because it comes in so many varieties, and you don't have to cut it yourself and deal with uneven slicing. or trying to make a sandwich on crookedly sliced bread. try making toast in a slice toaster with bread you cut yourself, it takes skill....

For many years, women mainly, have had to knead bread by hand, let it rise, then bake it in the oven. This was a once or twice a day chore. It took a lot of time, especially when you had to do your laundry in the nearest creek. That's why there is that expression. It cuts down of work and time to be able to pick up a loaf of sliced bread.

Sliced bread was once known as the "greatest bread since sliced thing". Don't ask. Actually, ask your parents.

With pre-sliced bread, you can find that perfect ratio between bread and filler. Neither one outweighs the other and they balance, just right.

Having said that, I prefer loaves, too.
