I eat a very healthy and balanced diet, I exercise, and I try to stay awake around 16 to 18 hours per day, so I might hopefully fall asleep. But it takes me from 30 minutes to an hour to fall asleep. What can I do? Is there something wrong?

There is some good advice here (except from the first guy). Melatonin rises in your body naturally at certain points and causes drowsiness. Milk contains it naturally (I am not a big milk fan, but some are) and can sometimes help. Melatonin tablets can be purchased over the counter...in fact I used to give a 1/4 of one to my golden retriever when thunderstorms came in because she would get sooooo afraid. That would help relax you. One person said bed is for sleeping...I am a big believer in that. If you want to read...go to a chair. Get your body used to the fact that BEDS ARE FOR SLEEPING...and that will help. Sometimes music helps. I know some people can't exercise at night at all because it makes them feel 'wired' and they can't sleep. Also, sometimes I will have a glass of wine (I know- you are too young, etc...but still....) sometimes while watching news or reading. I believe a glass of wine is just as safe as a tablet of melatonin, so I won't be swayed by the "Oh my gosh, you can't depend upon ALCOHOL to go to bed every night!" argument.
I would try music. Headphones/iPOD and good music can be pretty relaxing!

Also- instead of running or lifting ONE hour a day...you could bump it to TWO....THAT would probably make you more tired!!

:>

Don't drink caffiene in the afternoon, try not exercising less than an hour before you go to sleep. If this continues to be a problem, see your doctor. There could be some underlying problem that needs medical attention. Besides, doctors can prescribe sleeping pills if all else fails.

Make sure to exercise hours before you go to sleep and don't eat close to your bedtime either. Try and take a bath about an hour or so before you go to bed. Also, only use your bed for sleep, otherwise it confuses your body!

Your body could be lacking melatonin. You can buy melatonin pills at your local pharmacy. Follow the directions on the back. My husband did this, and we are both grateful that he did.

Also, drink milk about 30 minutes before bed. It may help as well.

Good luck!!

Try not to drink caffeine after 12 noon. And before bed try a decaffeinated tea or warm milk.

I am not a doctor however here is a possible technique.==> When you are trying to sleep do not concentrate on anything, especially trying to sleep.
