I'm a truck driver and a rap fan. I was just in Detroit yesterday and I go to Nebraska quite regularly. Detroit is right up there with the most crime ridden cities in the country and the city combats the problem by making cutbacks in law enforcement. You're from Nebraska? Dude I'm seriously not trying to make fun but Ne and The big dirty D are two worlds apart. I advise you to proceed with caution. The whole 8 mile movie thing? That hood is just as bad as they make it out to be if not worse. Remember that is where they shot Proof and he grew up there. Good luck cornhusker.

As a former resident of the Detroit area, moving to Detroit will be a big change and adjustment. When I moved from Detroit to Atlanta area, Detroit and the Detroit area was and has been for the last decade been on a steep decline. A majority of young people like yourself are leaving Detroit to find opportunity elsewhere because what young adults are looking for in Detroit is not being offered and what is offered is usually not in a safe area. If you become a resident of the City of Detroit, some of what you have to keep in mind include a lot of snow during the winters making for a difficult comminute, poor public transportation since Detroit has only a Bus System and a city like Los Angeles Mass Transportation, a city with decay and abandoned buildings, a city government that might not be easily to get a hold off, a very high crime rate, and the unemployment rates in Detroit and throughout the State of Michigan is very high.
I love Detroit but I could never live in the Detroit area again in the future. I have listed below some resources in the source section that could help influence your decision and thank you for considering living in Detroit in the future.

I have never been to LA but I am a Detroit native. First off, Detroit is NOT as bad as some people on here make it out to be!! D@mn! Dont get me wrong, it isnt the BEST place to reside, especially for the rest of your life but its not the WORST city either people! Most people are only going by what they see on TV, which is only BAD stuff unfortunately. Until you LIVE in Detroit, you cant make the call as to how bad it is. Now as for your question, Detroit probably isnt the best choice for rapping although you are correct, there are some great musical talents up & coming though. You have a better chance at being discovered in LA I would think though.

The music scene in Detroit is great. There are a lot of amazing shows and cool people. We love our music here cuz it's pretty much all we have. Half the year it's too cold to do anything. But people still pick themselves up and go out to see a good show somewhere. It's so cold, in fact, that in the summer everyone goes XTRA HARD. It's so fun to be alive in Detroit in the summer. But there's always winter again. And that's just enough to make you hate it here. If you don't have a BIG OL coat that goes down to your knees you're ******. You're also gonna need fleece lined, rubber bottomed boots. Think Sorels. If you don't have a car you might need one. The public transportation in Detroit is a joke. In summer you can always bike, but NOT winter. Don't listen to that 8 mile talk. You will be living nowhere near 8 mile. If you do you'll be bored cuz that's pretty far out. You will have to watch your back tho. Nowhere is safe. Not entirely, at least. Expect to be robbed, prepare for it.

I wouldn't advise you to move here. We have some of the highest unemployment in the country. "City Scene"....what city scene. Chicago as a city scene. New Orleans in ruin has a better city scene than this place. A few clubs and bars does not constitute a city scene.
I know you want to get into the music scene - but seriously, I'd perhaps go somewhere so you can support yourself while trying.
Compare to LA? There IS no comparison. Look at the population numbers....then go back and compare 15 years ago....that ought to tell you a lot about the dying city we call Detroit.

The "Metro Detroit" area is quickly becoming a suburb centered area. Most people that live in the burbs rarely go into the city for anything but a sporting event or fireworks display. If it keeps up it will no longer be called metro Detroit and more likely to be called Southeast Michigan.... a trend that has already begun.

I was born and raised in Detroit and currently live in the South. Detroit has its good points, but they are highly outnumbered by its negative points. Detroit has good food, entertainment, etc., but the city itself is crap. My grandparents still live there and I can't understand why they haven't moved yet! The Detroit-Metro area has been overcome by filth, slums, and crime. I wouldn't dare go downtown after dusk, and there isn't a 'nice' place to live near metro without paying an arm and a leg for a 1200 sq. foot home.
I have never lived in LA, but I can only assume you could live in a cheaper and nicer suburb in CA, rather than Detroit. It is a shame that they have let Detroit get the way it has. It makes me sick...

Well I am a Detroit Native and I've never been to LA, so I can't really draw a comparison. However, if you'd like to move here for rap, it is pretty difficult landing a rapping career in Detroit here. We have tons of local rap artists who seldom get play on the air waves of radio stations. Not trying to discourage you but most rap artists hustle before they actually make it, so just prepared, wherever you move, you will definitely have to bust your a s s to be heard. Best of Luck to you!

I encourage you to proceed with caution. The bright lights after the sun goes down truly has it's own allure.... But there's a lot of places where that light doesn't shine. I'd suggest renting a room, be it a hotel or an actual room (closer to Northwest Detroit, maybe Livonia, Dearborn. Westland is really nice too) and giving it a try. Keep out of the inner city unless you're cruising to downtown. It's rough out here. But I wish you all the best of luck, and I think you'd have as much a chance of surviving as the rest of us do ;-)

Are you NUTS? If you are going to make a pick (and like rap music) go to LA. All those "greats" that have come from Detroit do not still live there!
