The SIM card (subscriber identity module) is your cellular identity. They allow you to store your address book, contacts, history etc on a little chip. When you change phones you just move the chip and your identity follows it. It makes it super easy to change phones or upgrade because you save a bunch of time by not having to reenter information into a new phone's memory.

Phones that use sim cards are also much more secure because they are almost impossible to clone.
