Hatch won't open. Key goes in but doesn't turn. Can I open up the hatch some other way to check mechanism? If it's just a lube job than I would want to do that instead of taking to dealer. Any advice is much appreciated.

Your problem is fairly common on the 90-99 legacy/outback. The handle is rusting that you use to open gate.It is stuck either all the way up against gate or most of the way up.It will cause you to not be able to unlock the gate. You need to spray a rust penetrant like wd40 up on it and then pull the handle down or pry it down lightly. When it is back down, unlock the gate and then open the gate. Spray the handle again and work it up and down. If it wont free up the handle is only 8-12 dollars and should only be about 1/2 hour job.

If the key won't turn it has nothing to do with the hatch but the lock itself.

Sounds like either your lock got something in it, it froze up or something broke not allowing it to turn.

If the hatch is locked and you do not have an interior hatch release lever only the dealer or a lock smith will be able to get this open.

Its best to allow the professionals to tackle it.

Are you using the Valet key? It won't open glovebox either. The Outback has power door locks so use the "unlock " position to unlock all doors.Take off the inside trim to access the latch mechanism.

If you really want to save a trip to the dealership just to have them look at it, you could take off the plastic panel on the inside by removing the plastic fasteners and inspect it yourself. (Sometimes dealers will charge 40 bucks just to look at something). The fasteners usually have a circular center that you can pop out which loosens the whole piece. Usually a flat-head screwdriver will work well for this.

You may be able to release the locking mechanism from the inside latch location. Look for ways to disassemble the panel cover, sounds like the latching has disconnected that connects the linkage to the lock. (ken)
