there are "leashes" that attach to your wrist or foot that conduct static electricity away from you by being in constant contact with you and a grounding source. Maybe Radio Shack or Circuit City would have them. If its something that happens as you are walking around, you might have to keep something dragging on the floor behind you or in constant touch of something that is grounded otherwise you will carry the charge until you contact a ground. (and get zapped) hehehe

"Silver is the most conductive element and is extremely effective at dissipating electrical charges and static electricity. " (see source)

The site that I linked sells a pair of gloves with silver woven into the material. The site suggests leaving them in the dryer as a dryer sheet alternative, but I think they would suit your purpose better seeing as you'd actually be wearing them...

This seems more practical than "grounding" yourself :)

insulate yourself. static electricity also likes cold, rough edges, and other physical conditions. avoid these. look up static electricity on a search engine, perhaps this will suggest or you may have to infer, ways of avoiding grounding or conducting the power.

Try using a BLUNT knife with a plastic handle, touch the object with the knife while holding the knife tightly, and the static charge will dissipate.
I have the same problem at my place....crack.....ouch.......lol
