Ask a Southerner about relative connections. The answer is yes for genealogical purposes and no for dating purposes. Without particulars, I can only give an example. If, for instance, your first cousin (your mother's brother's son) has a cousin on the other side of his family (his mother's brother's son) that person would be you first cousin-once removed. He would be no genetic connection and therefore ok to date, marry etc., but would be listed in a full family tree as common descendants.
